A Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has handed down a seven-year prison sentence without the option of a fine to Anayor Ugo, a generator mechanic found guilty of defiling and impregnating a 12-year-old girl.
In 2021, Ugo, tasked with repairing the family’s power generator by the victim’s father in Oyigbo, Oyigbo Local Government Area, took advantage of the situation to commit the heinous act.
Following the assault, he reportedly threatened the underage girl, warning her not to disclose the incident.
Months later, when the girl’s mother observed changes in her daughter’s behavior, an inquiry ensued, leading to the revelation of the abuse.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Police, who initiated a search for the suspect.
Ugo was apprehended on 7 January, 2022, and subsequently charged to court.
During the trial, despite evidence and Ugo’s admission, the mechanic, in his early 50s, denied ejaculating, asserting that the minor had forcibly pulled him into her room.
In her judgment, Chief Magistrate Rita Ogugua stated that the prosecution successfully substantiated their case, emphasizing the evidence and Ugo’s admission.
Considering Ugo’s plea for mercy, the court sentenced him to seven years in prison without the option of a fine.
