The Sokoto-Zamfara area command of the Nigeria Customs Service is getting set to reopen the Nigeria-Niger border at Illela Sokoto state.
The Customs Area Controller, Kamal Mohammed announced this during a working visit to the border post.
Muhammed also said that meticulous preparations are underway in anticipation of the final directive.
Speaking to stakeholders at the entry point, Mohammed pointed out the key progress that has brought them there.
He said, “Now that ECOWAS has lifted sanctions on Niger Republic and power supply is back, my goal is to make sure everything is ready for reopening the Illela border while we wait for the final go-ahead.”
As part of efforts to foster collaboration and efficiency, the Comptroller also urged stakeholders and security agencies at the border station to prioritize cooperation, particularly in intelligence sharing and joint operations to safeguard the nation’s borders.
Expressing gratitude to Customs License Agents for their patience during the seven-month border closure, Muhammed said he acknowledge the challenges faced.
He said: “We know it has not been easy for you, but God willing, it will soon become history.”
As part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR), the Customs Service has also initiated the construction of a primary healthcare facility at the border station.
Once completed, Muhammed said the facility will cater to both Customs officers and the local Illela community.
He further extended appreciation to the Illela Community for their hospitality and paid homage to the Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa, Muhammad Zayyanu.
He called on the traditional ruler to advise his subjects against engaging in smuggling activities.
