Gunmen have shot dead a village head in Taraba State, SaharaReporters can report.
SaharaReporters learnt that the gunmen on Sunday night stormed Karin-Usmanu village in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area and killed the village head, Auwalu Abubakar.
The village head was gruesomely murdered barely five months after his younger brother was killed in similar circumstances.
The chairman of the local government council, Bitrus Ilu Danjos, confirmed the tragic incident to SaharaReporters on Monday.
He said, “Five minutes after the incident, I was called from Usmanu village and told that His Royal Highness, Auwalu Abubakar, the village head of Usmanu, was gunned down by some gunmen.
“Right now, the villagers have fled the village for fear of their lives. Even though some youths who suspected the attack may have come from a particular village are planning a reprisal, we’ve pleaded with them not to take the law into their own hands.
“It is really disturbing because five months ago, gunmen in a similar manner murdered the king’s younger brother in the same village.
“About now, we’re calling for calm because the state governor has been briefed and has since directed security operatives to restore normalcy there.”
The spokesperson for the state police command, DSP Kwache Gambo also confirmed the incident, saying that “efforts are in top gear to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice”.
