The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has stated that the Federal Government has not contacted the union despite its recent threat to go on strike.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and SSANU had on June 19, 2024, issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to settle four months of withheld salaries.
The JAC had additionally warned of closing universities and inter-university centers if the government did not release the withheld salaries by the ultimatum’s deadline.
In a letter to the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, the two non-teaching staff unions criticized the government for neglect and lack of sincerity.
In the letter titled, ‘Re- Four (4) months withheld salaries: Demand for immediate payment’, which was signed by the NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, the two unions said they could no longer guarantee industrial harmony in the universities.
SSANU’s National President, Muhammed Ibrahim speaking to Saturday PUNCH in Abuja on Friday, highlighted that the unions had yet to receive a response from the minister regarding the status of the withheld salaries mentioned in their letter.
