The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has officially debunked reports circulating on social media alleging the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement released by the Council on Sunday, July 20, 2025, and signed by Moyosola Adesina, anipr, Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC described the viral press release dated Saturday, July 19, as false, misleading and the handiwork of mischief-makers.
The fake release, which has been widely shared across several platforms, claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with WAEC had canceled the examination due to widespread malpractice, question paper leakages, and unauthorized digital dissemination of exam materials.
WAEC, however, categorically refuted the claim, emphasizing that the 2025 WASSCE has not been cancelled. “The said information did not emanate from the Council and should be disregarded in its entirety,” the Council stated.

WAEC also disclosed that the marking of scripts has just been concluded and that candidates can expect their results on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.
The Council further cautioned the public and stakeholders to only rely on verified information disseminated through WAEC’s official channels and accredited media platforms. It added that all authentic press statements are signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
In its closing remarks, WAEC urged candidates and the general public to remain calm and ignore the “spurious” publication, assuring that due process is being followed in the release of results.
