Oba Adejuyigbe Adefunmi II
The leader of Oyotunji African Village, Adegbolu Abiogemo Adefunmi, known as Oba Adejuyigbe Adefunmi II, was allegedly stabbed to death by his sister, Akiba Kasale Meredith, during a heated argument on Monday, July 29, 2024.
According to abcnews4, South Carolina authorities received a report of the stabbing around 2:45 p.m. at the village on Bryant Lane, as confirmed by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. The 47-year-old victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The suspect, 53-year-old Meredith, fled the scene on foot but was apprehended shortly afterward. She has been charged with murder and is currently held at the Beaufort County Detention Center, with her bond deferred.
A spokesperson for Oyotunji African Village stated, “We are not giving media interviews at this time due to ongoing cultural ceremonies,” which typically last two to three days.
Local residents have expressed their sorrow and fond memories of Adefunmi. Workers at a nearby gas station reminisced, “The King would stop by every morning for a cup of coffee—he was a good man and will truly be missed.”
Oba Adejuyigbe Adefunmi II was a prominent figure, leading Oyotunji African Village, a cultural and spiritual hub for the Yoruba community in America. He succeeded his father, Oba Efuntola Oseijeman Adelabu Adefunmi I, who founded the village in 1970. Since taking over in 2005, Adefunmi II had been dedicated to preserving traditional Yoruba culture while integrating modern elements.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with local authorities working to uncover further details surrounding the tragic event.
