Anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that it recovered over N248billion in the last 12 months.
Wilson Uwajaren, the Director of Public Affairs of the agency, who made this known while giving an update on the activities of the anti-graft agency so far on Thursday, noted that the sum of over £53,000 and €172,000 were also recovered.
According to the statement, €5,000 were also recovered for victims of crime in Spain, according to him, adding that the commission is taking its rapid response a notch higher as it will lead to a drop in cybercrime.
Uwajaren explained that the commission has also secured more than 35 convictions for Naira abuse by Nigerians at social events.
According to Uwajaren, three new directorates are set to emerge in Ekiti, Katsina and Anambra states.
A total sum of $180,300 and 53 vehicles, fraudulently taken by some Nigerians from Canadian citizens had in September returned to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The chairman of the Commission, Ola Olukoyede, while speaking at the signing ceremony for the return of the recovered vehicles and funds, disclosed that the Canadians were victims of cybercrimes.
Olukoyede stressed that recovering and returning the assets reinforced the commission’s commitment to fighting financial crimes. Adding that the event also emphasised the need for countries to collaborate to tackle financial and other forms of crime.
He stated that Nigeria should not be seen as a hub of financial and other crimes, adding that the country does not tolerate criminal activities.
The EFCC Chairman pledged to investigate, prosecute, and recover assets for victims of financial crimes.
