The Ogun State Government has ordered the closure of Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-Emi, following the death of Monday Arijo, an SS2 student.
The action comes after the arrest and suspension of a teacher alleged to have caused the student’s death last Friday through corporal punishment.
The school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has also been suspended after receiving a formal query for permitting corporal punishment, which contravenes state regulations.
This information was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr. Lekan Adeniran on Tuesday.
The statement partly read, “The closure of the school was based on the directive of the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, who has also directed that a panel should be set up to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
“The governor has promised that those liable by the outcome of the investigation will be made to face the full wrath of the law”.
In the wake of the student’s death, officials from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology have visited the family to extend condolences and convey the Ministry’s deep sympathy.
The visit also aimed to gather firsthand accounts of the incident for a comprehensive investigation.
The delegation included key figures such as the Director of Secondary and Higher Education, Principals General of Egba and Yewa Divisions, the Zonal Education Officer from Imeko Afon, and representatives from ANCOPPS, the Ogun State President of the Trade Union Congress, and the Ogun State Chairman of ASSUS.
During the visit, the Principals General and the Director of Education expressed heartfelt condolences and assured the family of the state government’s support during this difficult period.
The officials assured the family that a thorough investigation would be conducted to uncover the circumstances of the incident and that accountability would be sought.
They reaffirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring student safety, fostering a supportive school environment, and seeking justice for the bereaved family following the tragic loss of their son.
The DPO of Idi-Emi also pledged to fully investigate the incident and provide justice, while reassuring the family of the safety of students at the school.
As a gesture of support, a condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000 were presented to a family representative.
The family received the officials with deep grief and shock, expressing their profound sorrow over the sudden loss of their child.
