Popular Nigerian comedian and actor, Basketmouth, has voiced his concerns over Nigeria’s lingering economic hardships and leadership.
Speaking during a viral interview with AFRIMMA, Basketmouth cited rising inflation and depreciation of the naira from 1970 till date.
“Nothing can be done, quote me anywhere. Think about it. In the year I was born 1970, it was one naira to a dollar but now N1600 to 1dollar,” he stated, emphasizing the decline of the national currency.
The comedian criticized the government’s lack of effective policies, stating, “There was never a time from 1970 that the dollar crashed and went back to what it was. It has never happened. Every time it changes, all you hear is ‘E go better,’ but it just keeps getting worse.”
Basketmouth also expressed concern over rising costs for essential services, pointing to the recent increase in the price of a 100-page passport to N100,000.
He suggested that such price hikes might be a strategy by the government to capitalize on the struggles of the Nigerian population.
“What are the policies? And what have they done? Now 100 pages of passport has been increased to N100,000. I suspect that our government planned to make the Nigerian population suffer. So that when they suffer they can now want to japa, then they will increase the price of the passport to make more money,” he said.
“It is not like I have given up hope, I’m hopeful maybe one day, the country will be better. Let all believe in that pipe dream. It’s over”, he sarcastically added.
