House Of Representatives
The House of Representatives witnessed a heated session during deliberations on the controversial Tax Reform Bills introduced by the Bola Tinubu administration.
These bills have sparked widespread debate and opposition from various economic sectors and state governments.
Tensions flared when Akin Rotimi, a lawmaker representing Ekiti State, attempted to move a motion for the consideration of two reports.
While introducing himself, Rotimi stated that Ekiti was the first state to adopt the Tax Reform Bills, a comment that provoked loud disapproval from other lawmakers.
Despite offering an apology and retracting his statement, the uproar persisted, forcing Rotimi to step down the motion.
The situation escalated further when Hon. Ghali Tijani raised a motion of breach of privilege, demanding Rotimi’s resignation as the House’s spokesperson.
According to Tijani, Rotimi’s comments amounted to taking a definitive position on a bill yet to be debated.
“This is a matter of privilege, and Hon. Rotimi’s actions undermine the integrity of our deliberations,” Tijani argued, prompting Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu to assure the chamber that the issue would be investigated thoroughly.
The Tax Reform Bills remain a contentious topic, with stakeholders expressing concerns about their potential economic implications.
While some lawmakers support the reforms, others argue they are being prematurely endorsed without adequate debate or consensus.
