Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law, marking a significant step towards addressing energy sector challenges in the state.
The legislation, signed on Tuesday at the Lagos House in Ikeja, is designed to establish a robust framework for driving economic and industrial growth through improved energy infrastructure.
“The bill is a major step by the state government to ensure a 24-hour electricity supply to every corner of the state, following the Federal Government’s approval for states to generate and distribute energy in 2023,” said the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, on X.
The initiative is expected to reduce Lagos State’s reliance on the national grid and strengthen its energy independence.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted the bill’s critical role in positioning Lagos as a global city with a reliable and uninterrupted power supply.
In November, the state government invited independent power producers and energy solution providers to bid for the development of gas-fired power plants, a key step towards addressing Lagos’s ongoing electricity deficit.
This effort, championed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in collaboration with the Office of Public-Private Partnerships, is part of the Clean Lagos Electricity Market project aimed at enhancing the state’s energy infrastructure.
The announcement was made jointly by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, and the Special Adviser for Public-Private Partnerships, Bukola Odoe.
