The Federal Government of Nigeria, on Friday, began to disburse the entitlements of the military pensioners who staged an organized protest at the Ministry of Finance on Thursday.
Despite the approval of the supposed payment, the pensioners had been stalled for months on the excuse of no funds.
According to Saturday PUNCH, the pensioners were yet to receive the salary increment of 20% to 28% spanning January to November 2024.
To show their resolve, the military pensioners on Thursday, barricaded the Ministry’s main gate with canopies, chairs and mats and vowed not to leave until their demands which includes; ‘Overdue payments for palliatives from October 2023 to November 2024, bulk payment of the Security Debarment Allowance, an additional N32,000 added to their pensions, and a refund of pension deductions from the salaries of medically boarded soldiers’, are met.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Board of Trustee, Retired Members of Nigerian Armed Forces, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herbert, announced that they had started to get their benefits.
Mr Herbert said, “We have started receiving our benefits that was why the protest did not hold today.”
Furthermore, the Minister of Defence for State, Bello Matawalle, while applauding Pres. Tinubu’s, dedication to the well-being of serving and retired military personnels, also declared that all outstanding payments owed will receive attention.
Through the Director of Information and Public Relations, Henshaw Ogubike, the Minister, also added that the demand of the three-month salary increase for military personnel, made by the pensioners can be checked off the list as it is already being disbursed.
In part, the statement read, “Matawalle confirmed that alerts regarding the three-month salary increase for military personnel have begun to be received.”
