A High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has sentenced 22-year-old Jamiu Malomo to death by hanging for the murder of Asisat Akande, an alleged sex worker, in July 2021.
Malomo, who was 18 at the time of the incident, faced a single count of murder.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, January 22, Justice O. Ogunfowora declared that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He therefore found Malomo guilty as charged.
According to the judge, the evidence presented was credible and upheld the conviction, sentencing Malomo to death by hanging.
During the trial, the State Prosecuting Counsel, A.M. Adebayo, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, detailed the events leading to the crime.
He explained that the incident occurred on July 18, 2021, around 9:30 p.m. in the Ori-Apata community of Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta.
According to Adebayo, Malomo had taken Akande from the 3AD bar in the Panseke area to his residence for sexual activity.
Following their encounter, Akande demanded the agreed payment of N10,000. However, Malomo refused to pay the full amount, offering her only N8,000 instead.
The dispute escalated into a heated argument, during which Malomo pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed Akande in the neck, causing her death.
Adebayo further revealed that Malomo was later apprehended by the police at the 3AD bar, where he had returned to pick up another woman.
The court’s decision highlights the gravity of the crime, with Justice Ogunfowora emphasizing the need for accountability in such cases.
