The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed circulating rumours about his alleged arrest, describing the claims as baseless and false.
In a post titled The Recurring Fake News On Me on his official X account on Wednesday, Obi clarified that he is currently in his hometown, Onitsha, Anambra State, contrary to speculations trending on social media since Tuesday.
“I have been made aware of circulating fake news about my alleged arrest. Let me state unequivocally that these claims are entirely false.
“I am currently at my home in Onitsha, Anambra State. Such fake news on my person has become a pastime for some people,” Obi stated.
He referenced a similar incident in September 2024, where rumours falsely claimed that the Department of State Services (DSS) invaded his residence.
“Recall last year September, when I was in Rwanda, similar lies had gone out that DSS invaded my house; now, while I was in my home in Onitsha, Anambra State, they said I was arrested in Abuja. The motive of these peddlers cannot be positive.
“But let us not allow baseless rumours to distract us from the critical challenges we face as a nation. I thank the public for the concern, support, and dedication to the cause of a better Nigeria that is possible!” Obi added.
This clarification follows shortly after the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, claimed to have received over 200 death threats over his remarks against Obi.
Morka alleged that the threats were sparked by Obi’s accusation that his comments during a Sunday interview on Arise Television constituted a threat to the Labour Party candidate’s life.
He firmly denied making any statements that could be construed as threatening Obi, dismissing the allegations as unfounded.
