Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has insisted that he would have remained critical of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) even if he were part of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
This is as the political feud between El-Rufai and presidential media aide Daniel Bwala escalated on Thursday.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), El-Rufai dismissed claims that his criticism of the APC was tied to not being part of Tinubu’s government. He wrote:
“Good morning, @BwalaDaniel. I was a cabinet minister 22 years ago and was clear to Asiwaju that I was not interested in any position in his future government.
“The pathetic manner all of you latter-day converts to the Tinubu government make an issue of something that I never wanted in the first place is perhaps a reflection of the level of your moral flexibility.”
The exchange follows El-Rufai’s comments at a national conference in Abuja on Monday.
He declared at the conference that he no longer recognized the APC, accusing it of lacking internal democracy and evolving into a one-man-controlled party.
“You cannot afford to have illiterates, semi-illiterates, and cunning people as your leaders. This is why we end up with the poor leadership we have today,” El-Rufai said.
Reacting to these remarks, Bwala questioned whether the former governor would have taken the same stance had he been in Tinubu’s cabinet.
“My Senior brother, if you were to be in the government and cabinet, would you have held and expressed the same position?
“History is replete with examples. It is a government you participated in its formation, that you now want to unseat. Haba Mallam,” Bwala wrote.
El-Rufai swiftly fired back, maintaining that his position would have remained unchanged, even if he had served in the current administration.
“If I had remained in the Tinubu government, I would say or do the same on the tragedy within a party I was a founder of, and the government that emerged from it—first in private sessions with those concerned, and then go public if no remedial actions are taken. Go and check my public service record from 1998,” he stated.
El-Rufai was initially nominated by President Tinubu for a ministerial position in August 2023, but his nomination was rejected by the Senate.
Since then, the former governor has distanced himself from APC leadership events and has not been seen at Aso Villa or in the president’s inner circle, despite having played a key role in Tinubu’s 2023 election campaign
