Prof. Aisha Maikudi
The University of Abuja has confirmed the appointment of Prof. Aisha Maikudi as its new Vice-Chancellor, a decision that has sparked debate and protests.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the institution’s acting Director of Public Affairs, Habib Yakoob.
The selection process for the Vice-Chancellor was reportedly marked by controversy, with some stakeholders alleging that Maikudi did not meet the required years of experience for the position.
The matter also reportedly caused divisions within the university’s governing council, with some members boycotting meetings related to the appointment.
“The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, under the chairmanship of Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), has approved the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the 7th Substantive vice-chancellor of the University.
“The appointment was announced during the 77th Extraordinary Meeting of Council on Tuesday 31st December 2024.
The appointment takes effect from January 1, 2025, and it is for a nonrenewable tenure of five years.
“Maikudi emerged as the best among 10 shortlisted candidates and interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board of the University, in line with the extant regulations governing the process,” the statement said.
