
Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian national who plays football for Uganda’s Vipers Sports Club, has died following a motorcycle accident on Entebbe Road in Kampala.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, February 24, 2025, while the 29-year-old was on his way to a club training session after dropping off a friend at Entebbe Airport.
Lawal joined Vipers SC in July 2022 from Rwanda’s AS Kigali and was instrumental in their 2022/23 Uganda Premier League title victory.
This season, he had made eight league appearances for the club.
Before moving to East Africa, he played for several Nigerian Premier League teams, including Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC, and Nasarawa United.
Vipers SC confirmed his passing in an official statement: “We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning.
“His body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Fans, teammates, and the wider football community have been mourning his loss, remembering his contributions to the sport.
His passing is a significant blow to Vipers SC and the broader football community.
