In a fiery political clash, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has slammed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other opposition figures, branding them “roving opposition opportunists” for their alleged inaction during the recent crisis in Rivers State.
The ruling party accused these prominent leaders of failing to take meaningful steps to de-escalate tensions in Rivers, a state grappling with severe unrest that threatened lives, property, and national assets. The APC claimed that their silence revealed a greater interest in political gains rather than national stability.
A resident of Port Harcourt, Kelechi Nwosu, expressed frustration over the political back-and-forth, saying, “We, the people, are the ones suffering. Politicians are busy trading blame while businesses are shutting down, and families are living in fear. We need real solutions, not just statements.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, called out the opposition for what he described as their politically motivated and self-serving approach.
“We urge Nigerians to ignore roving opposition opportunists seeking to exploit the situation in Rivers State to escalate tension in the country,” Morka stated.
He further accused opposition leaders of focusing on media attention instead of playing a constructive role in stabilizing the situation.
“These opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, stood idly by and did nothing to help defuse the crisis, which had become a clear and present threat to peace, the safety of lives, and national assets in Rivers State. Today, these self-serving individuals did what they do best – issued a lengthy, convoluted, and utterly meaningless statement intended to get their names in the headlines and stir up tension.”
Despite its attack on the opposition, the APC praised the National Assembly for swiftly approving President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, in accordance with constitutional provisions. The party described the move as a testament to patriotism and commitment to national security.
Morka commended the 10th National Assembly for prioritizing the security and welfare of Rivers State residents and for setting aside partisan differences in the national interest. He also acknowledged the opposition caucus for supporting the emergency proclamation.
Reaffirming President Tinubu’s dedication to restoring peace in Rivers State, Morka assured that the administration remains focused on ensuring stability, law and order, and the protection of critical national assets.
“The President remains committed to ensuring peace, maintaining law and order, and protecting critical national assets in Rivers State. He is determined to restore constitutional order, ensuring that all three arms of government – executive, legislature, and judiciary – coexist and perform their constitutionally assigned functions for the well-being and good governance of Rivers State.”
