The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it an unconstitutional power grab aimed at dismantling democracy.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party rejected Tinubu’s decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara and replace him with retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, describing it as an attack on democracy and an attempt at state capture.
The PDP accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately fueling the crisis in Rivers to take control of the state and suppress political opposition. The party also questioned the legality of the emergency rule, arguing that it does not meet the constitutional requirements under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution.
Furthermore, the PDP warned Vice Admiral Ibas against accepting the appointment and vowed to resist any attempt to undermine democracy in Rivers State. The party called on civil society organizations and Nigerians to oppose what it described as a dangerous precedent.
With the National Assembly set to deliberate on Tinubu’s emergency rule request, the controversy over Rivers State’s governance is expected to escalate.
