Baba-Ahmed & Tinubu
A faction of the Labour Party (LP) has openly distanced itself from recent remarks made by the party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, regarding the legitimacy of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Arabambi Abayomi, the group condemned Baba-Ahmed’s characterization of the Tinubu-led government as “questionably constitutional,” warning that such rhetoric is undemocratic and potentially inciting.
“For the interest and peace of the nation, the Labour Party accepted the judgment of the Supreme Court — not because we were pleased, but because of the finality of the court’s ruling. The party has since moved on,” Abayomi stated.
The remarks by Baba-Ahmed, which were made during a meeting allegedly organized by Governor Alex Otti and Peter Obi on April 9, 2025, at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, reportedly took many within the party by surprise.
According to Abayomi, the former vice presidential candidate also granted a national television interview in which he claimed that the current administration’s appointments were “fake” and “illegal,” and accused the government of “spending our money” while “destroying our country.”
“The Labour Party was shocked to hear such comments, especially after the Supreme Court conferred legitimacy on the Tinubu government,” Abayomi said.
He further argued that Baba-Ahmed’s statements amounted to a call for mass action against a constituted authority, which the party cannot condone.
“We think there should be a limit to whipping up public sentiment against a legitimate government. While Nigerians have every right to hold government accountable, there is a need for caution,” he emphasized.
Reaffirming the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure, the faction reiterated that the Labour Party is committed to democratic principles and strongly dissociates itself from Baba-Ahmed’s “unfortunate and reprehensible comments.”
As tensions simmer within the opposition ranks, observers say the divide may signal deeper cracks within the party following its post-election trajectory.
