In a decisive move to ensure transparency and accountability ahead of the upcoming local government elections, the Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned the Chairman and commissioners of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for a comprehensive briefing.
The resolution was reached during Thursday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Dr. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, following a motion of urgent public importance raised by Hon. Oladipo Ajomale, Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary and LASIEC.
Raising the motion, Hon. Ajomale expressed deep concerns over the recently released election guidelines by LASIEC, describing them as vague and lacking in sufficient detail. According to him, the information currently available does not provide the clarity needed for effective legislative oversight or public understanding.
“There is a pressing need for LASIEC to come before this House and offer a full briefing on its preparedness for the local government elections,” Ajomale stated. “We cannot afford any ambiguity in a process as vital as the conduct of elections.”
Echoing this stance, Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu highlighted the importance of ensuring that the LASIEC committee chairman and other stakeholders are adequately informed about the commission’s electoral roadmap.
Several other lawmakers lent their voices in support of the motion, including Hon. Owolabi Ajani, Hon. Kehinde Joseph, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, and Hon. Bonu Solomon. They collectively raised concerns about insufficient voter education, lack of security details, and unclear plans for ad-hoc staff recruitment and training.
Hon. Ogundipe specifically pointed out that LASIEC should have formally engaged the House immediately after its new leadership was constituted, while Hon. Bonu Solomon criticised the commission for what he described as poor public sensitisation.
In his remarks, Speaker Obasa emphasized the critical role of transparency in electoral credibility, stating that LASIEC must rise to the expectations of Lagosians.
“It is not just about conducting elections; it is about conducting elections that are free, fair, and trusted by the people,” he said. “This House will not compromise on that.”
The Assembly’s move comes just weeks ahead of the scheduled July 12 local government elections, with stakeholders closely watching how LASIEC addresses the concerns raised by the legislature.
