Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra State election, following a decisive victory in the party’s primary held on Sunday, April 6, 2025.
The results were officially declared at about 4:56 a.m. by the Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee and Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu.
Ukachukwu secured a commanding lead with 1,455 votes, leaving his closest rival, Valentine Ozigbo, trailing with 67 votes. Other contenders—Johnbosco Onunkwo and Edozie Madu—received 26 and 8 votes respectively, while 26 votes were declared invalid.
In his acceptance speech, Prince Ukachukwu extended his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fostering a peaceful and transparent internal electoral process. He also acknowledged the support of the APC National Working Committee, Governor Otu and his team, fellow aspirants, and party delegates for their roles in the smooth conduct of the primary.
Calling for unity within the party, Ukachukwu urged his former opponents to join forces with him in the broader mission to secure victory for the APC in the November 8 governorship election.
Reflecting on his political journey, he noted his influence in shaping the state’s leadership over the years. “I have been instrumental to the emergence of successive governors in Anambra. I have played the role of a godfather, but now, I am ready to father myself,” he stated.
He promised to uphold the trust of party members and Anambra citizens, assuring them of his dedication and readiness to challenge the incumbent governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Two aspirants—Obiorah Okonkwo and Chukwuma Umeoji—withdrew from the race ahead of the primary, while Paul Chukwuma resigned from the APC.
A total of 1,630 delegates from all 320 wards across Anambra’s 21 local government areas participated in the primary, with five delegates representing each ward.
With the APC ticket secured, Ukachukwu is set to face off against Governor Soludo of APGA, George Muoghalu of the Labour Party (LP), and candidates from 12 other political parties in what promises to be a closely watched race.
