Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) have suspended their two-day strike action following the intervention of the Nigerian government.
SaharaReporters had reported that the strike disrupted flight operations across the country and left many passengers stranded. It was called off after a meeting held on Thursday with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, in Abuja.
The NiMET workers had downed tools in protest over poor working conditions, non-implementation of the new national minimum wage, failure to pay outstanding allowances to omitted staff, and the neglect of essential training programmes.
The crucial meeting was attended by the Director General of NiMET, representatives of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and officials from major aviation unions, including the National Union of Transport Employees, the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the National Union of Air Transport Employees.
Flight disruptions were recorded at several airports including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, causing inconvenience to passengers across the country.
In response to the situation, Air Peace suspended all its operations. The airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Allen Onyema, had ordered the immediate cancellation of flights nationwide.
“If NiMET has not called off the strike, cancel every Air Peace flight now with immediate effect. People’s lives and the safety of our equipment and our crew are foremost,” he said.
“I don’t care if other airlines are flying. Suspend every Air Peace flight nationwide. Look at the thunderstorm everywhere. Look at the kind of weather we are going into, and NiMET, which is supposed to provide these things, is on strike, and we are flying.
“Suspend all flights with immediate effect, until further notice, until that strike is over. Safety first.”
Following the suspension of the strike, flight operations have resumed, and normalcy is gradually returning to the nation’s airports.
