Emir Sanusi
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has formally invited the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, for questioning following a deadly clash that occurred during the recent Eid-el-Fitr procession in Kano.
The incident, which took place on Eid Day as the Emir’s entourage journeyed from the Eid prayer ground to the palace in a traditional procession, resulted in the death of a local vigilante member, identified as Surajo Rabiu. Another individual was reported injured during the chaos, casting a shadow over the otherwise festive Sallah celebrations.
In a letter dated April 4, 2025, and signed by Commissioner of Police, CP Olajide Rufus Ibitoye, the Emir was invited to appear before the Force Intelligence Department (FID) in Abuja for an investigative meeting.
“I have the directives of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), to invite you for an investigative meeting with regards to an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain,” the letter stated.
The clash has sparked concerns about security management during high-profile religious and cultural events in the region, especially amid lingering political tensions.
While no official statement has been issued by the Kano Emirate Council, sources say the palace is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The death of Surajo Rabiu has drawn condolences from community leaders and raised calls for justice and accountability as authorities seek to uncover the cause of the violence.
