President Bola Tinubu has dismissed Mele Kyari and the entire board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), citing underperformance and failure to meet key production targets.
The shake-up, announced Wednesday, is part of Tinubu’s broader strategy to boost Nigeria’s crude oil and gas output. Bashir Ojulari has been appointed as the new Group CEO, effective April 2, 2025, with Musa Ahmadu-Kida as non-executive chairman.
Presidency officials described the move as a necessary shift to inject fresh expertise into the sector, emphasizing the need for new leadership to drive higher production and meet the administration’s targets.
Under the new board’s directive, NNPCL aims to increase crude production to 2 million barrels per day by 2027 and 3 million by 2030, alongside ramping up gas production and refining capacity.
Stakeholders, including petroleum marketers and industry experts, have welcomed the appointments, urging the new leadership to revamp refineries, restore investor confidence, and ensure energy security.
