Adamu Garba, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former presidential aspirant, has raised concerns over the growing disconnect between the presidency and the reality in the country, blaming sycophants for misleading President Bola Tinubu into believing all is well.
Speaking as a guest on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Tuesday, Garba warned that the APC is under threat, particularly from the newly floated opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as a group of opportunistic “vultures.”
“They (ADC coalition) hope for our loss, and that is why we need to be serious,” he said.
Garba called for introspection and honesty within the APC’s leadership, insisting that sycophancy must be eradicated from around the president.
“That is the more reason why we need to be very sincere with ourselves and make sure that the leadership of the party is somebody that is truthful and capable of listening to criticisms and accepting the facts without any flattery, without any sycophancy because I believe there is a lot of sycophants around the president; people are telling him that things are okay things are not okay,” he said.
His remarks come amid political tensions and internal party wrangling following the controversial resignation of APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.
Garba also reflected on the waning electoral strength of the APC in the North following the exit and recent death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He explained that Buhari’s famed political capital particularly the “12 million bloc votes” he garnered in previous elections was already absent by the 2023 general elections.
“Buhari left the presidency in 2023, and when you look at the outcome of the 2023 election, the APC had only 5.5 million votes in the north. Where were the 12 million votes?” he asked.
“Buhari’s 12 million votes were gone even before his death in early July 2025,” Garba added.
Nonetheless, he noted that despite the drop in voter numbers, the APC was able to win the 2023 presidential election because of its structure and strategy.
“But yet we won the election based on the system that was established, the structures in place and the strategies deployed. What we need now is to re-engineer our strategies again now with his absence,” Garba said.
