At least 200 houses and public schools were destroyed on Sunday when a violent windstorm swept through Ilorin and Ogele/Eyenkorin in the Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The storm, which accompanied heavy rainfall, also knocked down electricity poles and plunged several areas into darkness.
Residents reported that over 200 buildings, including schools, shops, and business premises, collapsed due to the strong winds. In Ilorin West, debris carried by the storm blocked the drainage at Kuntu Bridge, exacerbating the impact.
According to PUNCH, the worst-affected communities include Eyenkorin, Ogele, Ifelodun, Ifesowapo, Orisunbare, Odo-Akuo, Apata Ajele, Alagbado Eyenkorin, Basa, Yakoyo, and Lekki.
Among the damaged structures were Ogele Primary School, Ansarul-Deen Primary School, and D-Light A-Nur Nursery/Primary School, which had their roofs completely blown off.
At least 15 private schools, such as Community Secondary School, Apata Ajele, and Wilson School, Alagbado, sustained heavy damage, with some classrooms collapsing.
The windstorm also tore off the roof of Government Day Secondary School and destroyed baseball facilities in Adeta, Ilorin West.
In the aftermath, many affected residents were seen salvaging their belongings and seeking refuge with neighbours as they awaited government intervention and aid from well-meaning individuals.
Zubairu Abiola, vice chairman of the Ifelodun community in Eyenkorin, expressed distress over the destruction and appealed for urgent assistance.
“The rainstorm has rendered many residents of the community and its adjoining areas homeless,” Zubairu said.
“We want to appeal to the state governor, Mallam AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, to come to the rescue of the communities as always done by him even when there is no calamity.”
As the affected communities grapple with the devastation, residents are calling for swift government action to help them rebuild and restore essential services.
