Rice traders in the Badagry area have debunked a viral voice note claiming that rice sold in the area is responsible for the death of a customs officer and is “killing people.”
In a video made available to Lagos Reporters, the visibly angry traders declared that the rice being sold in Badagry is safe and not killing anyone, contrary to the fear-inducing audio message circulating on social media.
“We want to make it clear: rice is not killing anyone in Badagry,” one trader said. “We eat this rice ourselves, our families eat it, and no one has died. The woman behind this false voice note must be arrested and jailed for 30 days.”
The traders demanded that the unidentified woman provide proof of her claims, including the name and body of the alleged customs officer she claimed died after consuming the rice.
“This kind of lie can destroy people’s livelihoods,” another trader added. “She must be made to face the law for causing panic and spreading fake news.”
They urged the Lagos State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate and prosecute the woman to prevent a repeat of such misinformation.
