Peter Obi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed concerns about the difficulties of governing Nigeria, highlighting the country’s entrenched systemic challenges.
According to him, these issues pose significant obstacles to effective leadership and positive transformation.
Obi made this remark during a special thanksgiving service held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Aguiyi Ironsi Layout, Umuahia, in celebration of the two-year anniversary of Governor Alex Otti’s administration in Abia State.
“It is difficult to govern Nigeria, especially when you want to do it right,” Obi said during his address at the church service.
“Continue to remember the Governor and his team in prayers. Do the same for Nigeria; that God should touch the hearts of our leaders to use public money for public good. It is not our money—we are only trustees.”
Commending Governor Otti’s performance over the past two years, Obi praised the Abia State leader for what he called a clear departure from the norm, noting that Otti’s leadership should serve as an example for others across the nation.
“We have come to celebrate two years with a difference. People always say they need eight or ten years to make a change, but I have always said that one day can make a difference. In Abia, everyone can see the change you don’t need the radio or someone to tell you,” Obi said.
Reaffirming his commitment to national progress, Obi emphasized that his political ambition is not motivated by desperation for power.
“I’m not desperate to be President. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work. We want future leaders like Governor Otti,” he stated.
In his own remarks, governor Otti attributed the success of his administration to divine guidance and grace, referencing scripture to express his gratitude.
Quoting 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, Otti said, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God gave the increase. We’ve all worked hard, but nothing would have come out of it if God didn’t back us. That’s why we return all thanks to Him.”
He extended appreciation to members of the legislative and judicial arms of government as well as his executive team for their contributions to what he called “the new Abia project.”
Governor Otti also expressed deep gratitude to Peter Obi for his consistent encouragement and moral support, describing him as “a shining example of good governance.”
Earlier during the church service, Pastor Enyinnaya Uguru, former President of the Abia North Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, offered spiritual insight and counsel to the gathered leaders and attendees. He warned political leaders not to become complacent with short-term achievements at the expense of long-term vision.
According to Pastor Uguru, Governor Otti’s eventual emergence in 2023, after several unsuccessful attempts, was part of divine preparation. “Periods of delay are often periods of preparation,” he said.
He lauded the Governor’s performance so far, stating: “You are doing well. I’m saying this because I have evidence.”
Vanguard reports that the thanksgiving service drew a large attendance, including top government officials, political stakeholders, religious leaders, and citizens from across the state.
