The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reaffirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, drawing a line under months of internal disputes and uncertainty over his position.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, announced the NWC’s decision, emphasizing that Anyanwu would resume his role immediately.
According to Damagum, the affirmation represents the committee’s commitment to “party unity and the rule of law.”
Anyanwu, who previously served as a senator representing Imo East, was elected National Secretary during the party’s National Convention in 2021.
However, his continued stay in the position was thrown into controversy in 2023 after he emerged as the PDP’s governorship candidate in Imo State.
The development stirred internal divisions, with some members arguing that Anyanwu had automatically vacated his national post by running for elective office, an action allegedly contrary to the PDP’s constitution, which prohibits any official from retaining a party position while contesting public office.
The result was a prolonged power struggle marked by legal battles and competing claims to the national secretary’s seat.
Various factions within the party demanded his replacement and even attempted to install an acting secretary.
But following the conclusion of the Imo governorship election in which Anyanwu was defeated by the incumbent governor from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hope Uzodimma, his supporters began lobbying for his reinstatement.
After weeks of internal consultations and legal reviews, the NWC has now resolved the matter by reaffirming Anyanwu’s mandate.
Vanguard reports that the decision is widely interpreted as a strategic step towards restoring stability within the party’s leadership ranks, especially with the 2027 general elections on the horizon.
It also underscores the NWC’s intent to reconcile aggrieved factions and consolidate the party’s focus as Nigeria’s main opposition.
