Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), blaming his exit on the hijack of the PDP by what he termed “anti-democratic forces.”
Momodu announced his resignation in a letter dated July 17, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP Ward 4 in Ihievbe, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State.
His departure from the party comes just days after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also dumped the PDP for the ADC, fueling growing speculations of a broader opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In his resignation letter, Momodu wrote, “I wish to inform you of my decision to resign from our political party, PDP, with immediate effect.
“My reason is simple and straightforward. Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight.
“It is, therefore, honourable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while the majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress (ADC).”
Momodu confirmed he would be joining the opposition coalition being built around the ADC to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Earlier this month, the former PDP presidential aspirant had publicly criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of undermining the PDP from within.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Momodu said Wike had worked against the PDP during the 2023 election despite being a prominent member of the party.
“Without any doubt, people are leaving the carcass of PDP to Wike and his cronies, that’s all. It was a prophecy foretold,” he declared.
He also accused the APC of deliberately weakening opposition parties by infiltrating them with loyalists and agents to prevent any meaningful challenge in 2027.
“The ruling party does not want competition in 2027, so what they are doing now is to send their moles into any major formidable party,” he alleged.
Momodu didn’t spare the current administration either. He sharply criticised the state of the nation under President Tinubu, comparing it unfavourably with that of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“I know you might not be able to answer but is this the Nigeria of your dreams? Are you better today than you were two years ago?
“At least when Buhari left, we saw what he left no matter how bad it was, but it is much worse today,” he said.
