Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing what he described as the party’s failure to offer credible political leadership in Nigeria.
In a letter shared on his X handle on Thursday, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye stated, “I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at all levels of involvement.”
He attributed his decision to what he termed the party’s diminishing capacity to address the country’s challenges.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” he said.
Melaye, a former senator and governorship candidate of the PDP in Kogi State, added that his conscience would no longer allow him to remain affiliated with the party.
He said, “Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the parties or lend my support to her agenda.
“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect.”
Melaye expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve under the PDP platform, saying, “Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership.”
His resignation marks another high-profile exit from the opposition party, amid growing internal dissatisfaction and concerns over its political direction.
Recently, Atiku Abubakar, former Nigerian Vice President, also announced his resignation from the PDP.
Atiku’s letter, dated July 14, 2025, was posted by Dele Momodu and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP at Jada 1 Ward, Jada LGA, Adamawa State.
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he said.
“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
Atiku, Melaye and some others had recently joined a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying they are a better political option for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Others on the coalition include Nasir El-Rufai, David Mark, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola.
