Fayose
Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has declared his full support for the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu and Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji in the 2027 general elections, despite remaining a prominent member of the opposition.
Fayose made the declaration on Monday at a political gathering held in Ado-Ekiti.
Addressing a crowd that included former governors, state leaders, and National Assembly members from Ekiti, Fayose gave what he described as an “unreserved” endorsement of Tinubu and Oyebanji based on their performance in office.
“I hereby endorse publicly, without reservation, President Bola Tinubu for a second term. I also endorse our governor, Biodun Oyebanji, and his deputy for a second term,” Fayose said.
Describing the event as a “unique gathering,” Fayose said it symbolized political unity in Ekiti and offered a model for other states to emulate. “This unity is a model for all states in Nigeria,” he said.
Though a staunch member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Fayose stressed that his endorsement was not driven by party loyalty but by the achievements of those he is supporting.
“I am not a member of his party and I will never be, but I stand here to say I have seen the good work. I commend Governor Oyebanji’s humility and leadership. He deserves another term,” he asserted.
The two-term former governor then challenged Oyebanji to emulate his electoral success, recalling his record of winning across all 16 local government areas and 177 wards of Ekiti State.
“Who will, for the first time again, become the record holder to win in all the 16 local governments and all the 177 wards of Ekiti? That is taken for granted. But when we get to the field, we will contest,” Fayose said.
He also commended fellow ex-governor Segun Oni, who was present at the event, for fostering cross-party inclusivity and promoting political harmony in the state.
Fayose took time to congratulate members of opposition parties who have recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), even as he distanced himself from any defection.
“I congratulate all the decampees; they should continue decamping. It’s a good thing as long as this governor returns for a second term. It doesn’t matter how many decampees come over except me. I’m coming nowhere,” he said with a touch of sarcasm.
