As Lagos State conducts its local government elections today, Saturday, July 12, the judiciary has taken a crucial step to ensure post-election accountability with the inauguration of two Election Appeal Tribunals.
The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, formally inaugurated the tribunals on Friday during a ceremony held at the Ikeja High Court Conference Room.
Each tribunal is composed of four chief magistrates and chaired by a retired High Court judge, who will sit concurrently in Lagos Island and Ikeja to hear appeals arising from the elections.
Justice Taofikat Oyinkan-Abdullahi (Retd.), will preside over the Lagos Island panel, which includes Magistrates Michael Olubi, Olaitan Ajayi, Salamah Matepo, and Hotepo Lazarus.
In Ikeja, Justice Sherifah Solebo (Retd.), will lead the tribunal alongside Magistrates Da/vies Rasak, Oluwatosin Fowowe-Erusiafe, Adepeju Odusanya, and Lynda Balogun.
Charging the members to conduct their work with integrity, Justice Alogba, called for fairness and strict adherence to the law, reminding them of the legal framework governing tribunal activities under the 2016 Amendment of the Lagos State Local Government Law.
The amendment mandates that election petitions must be filed within 21 days of result declaration, and all tribunal proceedings concluded within 45 days.
“Any decision or action taken outside the legally prescribed time limit is a nullity and of no legal effect,” Alogba warned.
He therefore, urged the panels to resist bias and maintain the high standards for which the Lagos judiciary is known, emphasizing that the public perception of justice hinges significantly on the conduct of election tribunals.
“The Lagos State judiciary is well known for its integrity and as a torchbearer in the nation’s judiciary. I urge you to go out and put in your best. Not everyone will be satisfied with the outcomes, but justice must be seen to be done,” Alogba concluded.
