On Wednesday, elected chairmen and council members from each of the state’s 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs will get certificates of return from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC.
In a phone call, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), the chairman of LASIEC, verified the development and said that the event was originally planned for Tuesday but had to be postponed since the Federal Government declared it a public holiday.
“It was supposed to hold on Tuesday,” she said, adding, “but due to the public holiday on that day, it has been moved to the next working day, which is Wednesday.”
After former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away in a London, United Kingdom, hospital on Sunday, the Federal Government announced Tuesday as a public holiday to mark the beginning of a period of national mourning.
In his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, his funeral is set for Tuesday.
According to a LASIEC official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they lacked authorization, the presentation will be held on Wednesday at the commission’s offices.
“All elected local government chairmen and councillors are expected to receive their certificates of return on Wednesday,” the official disclosed.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, won a landslide victory in Saturday’s local government elections on July 12, 2025, taking home all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 of the 376 councillorship positions in the state.
The only exception was Ward D in Yaba LCDA, where Babatunde Dosunmu, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defeated his opponent from the APC.
The results were formally announced on Sunday by Justice Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.) from the commission’s headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.
