Owolabi Salis

A United States-based Nigerian lawyer, Owolabi Salis, has been celebrated for making history as the first Nigerian to travel to space.

Salis was part of the 13th human spaceflight and the 33rd mission of the New Shepard program, operated by Blue Origin. The flight also included Allie Kuehner and her husband, Carl Kuehner, Leland Larson, Freddie Rescigno Jr., and Jim Sitkin.

Speaking after the mission, Salis shared a reflective message.

He said “People should stop fighting. Leaders in this world should all be gathered and sent to space to live there for one day — they’ll all be humble.”

The New Shepard space tourism program has so far flown 70 individuals to the edge of space.
