Top Nigerian political leaders, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, have formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the political platform for their opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The coalition unveiled its platform on Tuesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, marking a significant step towards challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming elections.
Prominent figures at the event include:
Atiku Abubakar, 2023 PDP presidential candidate
Peter Obi, Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023
Nasir El-Rufai, former Kaduna State governor
Rotimi Amaechi, former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation
David Mark, former Senate President, recently appointed interim national chairman of ADC
Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun State governor, appointed interim national secretary of ADC
Speaking at the event, Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, revealed that Peter Obi has submitted his proposal to serve a single four-year term if elected president in 2027.
“We have presented Peter Obi’s one-term proposal to the coalition for consideration. It is rooted in integrity and demonstrates the type of leadership Nigeria needs at this critical time,” Tanko said.
Peter Obi had earlier stated his willingness to govern for only one term to respect Nigeria’s unwritten power-sharing and zoning agreements. According to Obi, any candidate from the South elected in 2027 must vacate office by May 28, 2031, to ensure regional balance in leadership.
Although Nigeria’s constitution allows a president to serve two terms, Obi believes that four years is sufficient to implement his policies and drive impactful governance.
The adoption of the ADC as the coalition’s platform signals a major political shift as opposition leaders consolidate forces to unseat President Tinubu and the APC in the upcoming elections.
