The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that the G-5 Governors ever supported Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing the former Anambra State governor of “pretending to be humble” for public sympathy.
Speaking during a visit to Edo State on Tuesday, Wike took a swipe at Obi’s populist gestures, particularly his well-publicized act of serving food at public gatherings.
“This is not where a presidential candidate will be carrying food to serve. No this is pretense. How long will he be serving the food?” Wike questioned.
He added, “As a presidential candidate to carry food and be serving and Nigerians are laughing? Saying he is humble. Who told you that is humility?”
Wike criticized Nigerians for falling for what he described as “theatrics and deception”, accusing them of celebrating public stunts rather than seeking leaders who speak hard truths.
“And somebody will be telling you as a presidential candidate, ‘when I win, I will use a commercial plane’ and you think he is telling you the truth? Which security will allow you?” he said, taking another jab at Obi’s campaign narrative.
The FCT Minister, known for his outspoken views, further stated:
“We must tell ourselves the simple truth. Nigerians, you like people who will play you wayo, you don’t like people who will tell you the truth.”
Wike’s comments are the latest in the ongoing political war of words between major political figures following the 2023 general elections and rising speculations ahead of 2027.
His statement also sheds light on the continued fracture within opposition ranks, especially as the so-called G-5 Governors a group of aggrieved PDP governors during the last election cycle continue to play pivotal roles in national political discourse.
