Late Buhari
Former lawmaker Shehu Sani has called on Nigerians to refrain from speaking ill of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Buhari’s death has sparked mixed reactions across the country. While many leaders have paid tribute to the former president, some citizens and activists have criticised his legacy.
Activist Omoyele Sowore described Buhari’s tenure as leaving “deep scars on Nigeria’s democratic fabric,” citing “repression, economic hardship, insecurity, and religious bigotry.” Others on social media expressed dismay that a former president died abroad, pointing to Nigeria’s inadequate healthcare facilities.
In response, Sani took to his Facebook page to caution against disparaging the deceased. “We are all mortals awaiting an uncertain fate at an uncertain time and in uncertain places,” he wrote. “A living man is still on trial and cannot judge the dead. Let the sleeping soul rest.”
Sani’s plea comes amid ongoing debates about Buhari’s legacy, as Nigerians continue to grapple with the impact of his leadership.
