The faction of the Labour Party led by Senator Nenadi Usman has denied any involvement in a proposed coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Friday during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, the Interim National Secretary of the faction, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, stated that the party maintains its internal structure and has not joined any alliance.
He dissociated the party from the coalition reportedly spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 and allegedly involves opposition figures including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Nasir El-Rufai.
“Well, I don’t know about that, and I don’t know if we are in the ring; they’ve not told me that.
When you talk about coalition – already Labour Party has the machinery of internal coalition. The Labour Party is getting extremely stronger,” he said.
Addressing the involvement of Peter Obi in reported coalition discussions, Nwokocha clarified that although Obi is highly respected for his role as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, his personal political engagements do not translate into institutional endorsement by the Labour Party.
He also reiterated that Julius Abure’s tenure as National Chairman had expired, attributing the emergence of the interim leadership to what he described as a “political accident.”
Responding to concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) still lists Abure as chairman on its official portal, Nwokocha replied, “That you place your picture in a place does not make you the owner of the place.”
Commenting on the role of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, at the NEC meeting held on Friday, he maintained that the governor was a legitimate member of the NEC according to the party’s constitution.
Nwokocha confirmed that INEC was duly informed of the NEC meeting and explained the absence of former women leader Usman, attributing it to an emergency.
He added that she was expected to rejoin party activities before the end of the weekend.
On resolving the party’s internal crisis, he maintained that the matter had already been settled through the courts.
