A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced senior government official, Baltasar Ebang Engonga to eight years in prison for embezzlement, months after he made headlines over leaked sex tapes involving the wives of other officials.
According to Supreme Court press director Hilario Mitogo, who briefed reporters via WhatsApp, the Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting funds allocated for official travel expenses and using them for personal purposes.
Engonga, a married former head of the national financial investigation agency, was charged alongside five other senior officials over the alleged embezzlement of hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich Central African nation.
Widely known by the nickname “Bello,” Engonga drew international attention last November when sex tapes some recorded in his finance ministry office surfaced on social media while he was being held in pretrial detention for the embezzlement case.
The videos sparked a flood of online parodies, including music, dances, and jokes about a spoof aphrodisiac nicknamed “Balthazariem.”
Mitogo confirmed that the provincial court imposed an eight-year prison term on Engonga along with a $220,000 fine.
