Naira Marley
In a dramatic turn of events that has reignited conversations across social media, Marlian Music boss, Naira Marley has finally addressed the tragic death of former signee, Mohbad, offering a detailed account of where he was and what he believes happened.
In an emotional tell-all of the events surrounding the tragedy, Marley revealed that the heartbreaking news of Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023, reached him while he was outside the country, a moment he described as unbelievable and deeply confusing.
“Someone among us said, ‘Mohbad is dead.’ I looked at him and said, ‘It’s a lie, he wants to blow again.’ Exactly what I said. Then I saw it on Instagram, InstaBlog wrote Mohbad died of an ear infection. I thought, how can someone die of an ear infection? Next thing, Twitter blew up, ‘Naira Marley, you’ve killed him,’” he recounted.
The Marlian Music boss admitted that instead of having the space to mourn his former signee, he was forced to defend himself against accusations fueled by old viral videos of Mohbad’s clashes with NDLEA operatives and his former manager.
Marley alleged that blogs were being paid to spin false narratives, pointing out that he had passport stamps and evidence proving he wasn’t even in Nigeria at the time.
“I didn’t even get the chance to mourn him properly because every time I tried, someone sent a message saying I killed him,” he said.
Addressing the widely circulated video of socialite Sam Larry confronting Mohbad, Marley explained he first saw it when the rest of the public did.
According to him, Larry who was also not in the country at the time of the tragedy later claimed he had only approached Mohbad over money matters, insisting he never harmed him.
Marley maintained that the clip was misrepresented and wrongly tied to Mohbad’s passing.
Despite the storm of controversy, Marley claimed that the last time he saw Mohbad was on October 4, 2022, and insisted he had no role or was complicit in Mohbad’s demise. He therefore urged the public to focus on uncovering the real cause of death, not chasing conspiracy theories.
“At the end of the day, it’s about finding out what really happened to him. That’s what matters, not false accusations,” he stated adding that in a developed country with better procedures, everyone who was with Mohbad during the last 48 hours of his life will be arrested and interrogated.
Mohbad’s death has left a scar on the Nigerian music scene, but Marley’s account adds yet another layer to the tragedy, especially with the backlash and accusations he was forced to endure in silence.
This stands as a reminder of how grief can easily be drowned out by noise, and how in the rush to assign blame, the truth which in this case still lies in the shadows, may often left behind.
