Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that he would scrap the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project if elected President, describing the multibillion-naira initiative as a conduit for looting public funds.
Speaking during an X Space conversation tagged “Weekend Politics”, Amaechi did not mince words, saying:
“I will abandon the coastal road that road is for stealing.”
Amaechi, who served as Rivers State governor and later as a key member of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, also took a political swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 ambitions, pledging to throw his weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate but only if the party conducts a transparent and credible primary.
“I will support whoever emerges ADC presidential candidate to unseat President Bola Tinubu,” Amaechi affirmed, stressing that Nigeria needs leadership anchored on honesty and national interest rather than projects that enrich a few.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, championed by the Federal Government as a transformative infrastructure linking Nigeria’s coastal states, has been touted to boost commerce, tourism, and connectivity. However, critics, including Amaechi, allege that its cost, procurement process, and execution are riddled with opacity.
Amaechi’s remarks are already generating heated political debate, with observers noting that his open criticism of the project and public support for an opposition party’s candidate could signal a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
