Trade Fair Complex
Tension erupted at the popular Trade Fair Market in Lagos on Monday as traders shut down business activities to protest against what they described as an “outrageous” 300% increase in shop rents.
The aggrieved traders, who staged a peaceful demonstration, accused shop agents of being behind the sudden hike, insisting that the move is unjustifiable and aimed at frustrating small businesses already battling harsh economic realities.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, the traders demanded the immediate cancellation of the rent increase and called on the Lagos State Government to urgently intervene before the situation escalates further.
“This increase is unbearable. How can rent jump by 300% at a time like this? We can’t survive under such exploitation,” one trader told Lagos Reporters.
Another protester added: “We want the government to step in. These agents are enriching themselves at our expense. If nothing is done, many of us will lose our shops and our means of livelihood.”
The protest comes amid rising public concern over skyrocketing rent prices across Lagos. Similar complaints from residents over the sharp rise in the cost of housing and shop rentals in various parts of the state.
Now, the Trade Fair traders have become the latest group to openly voice their frustration, vowing to sustain their protest until their demands are met.
