A General Court Martial at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State, has sentenced Private Lukman Musa of the Nigerian Army to death by hanging for murdering tricycle rider Abdulrahman Isa in Azare, Bauchi State. The verdict, delivered by Brigadier General Liafis Bello, President of the 3 Division Court Martial, also included a two-year imprisonment term for unlawful possession of ammunition. Additionally, Musa was dismissed from service and stripped of his military ranks and privileges.
Musa was found guilty of culpable homicide and unlawful possession of ammunition, contrary to Section 220 of the Penal Code and the Firearms Act, respectively. According to court proceedings, Musa and an accomplice, Mr. Oba, lured Isa to Musa’s home under false pretenses, assaulted him until he was unconscious, and then strangled him to death. The duo concealed Isa’s body in a sack and abandoned it along the Shira-Yala axis of Bauchi State, later selling his tricycle, which led to their exposure.
The court martial’s decision reflects the Army’s commitment to discipline and the rule of law. Major Aminu Mairuwa, Acting Deputy Director of Legal Services, 3 Division, stated that the verdict demonstrates that no personnel is above the law. The trial, which began in August 2025, was convened under the authority of Major General Folunsho Oyinlola, General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace ¹.
The victim’s family has welcomed the judgment, with the victim’s elder brother, Anas Isa, thanking the court and the Nigerian Army for delivering justice and providing some measure of closure. The Army’s stance on zero tolerance for indiscipline, criminality, and human rights violations among its personnel was reinforced by the conviction and sentencing of Private Musa.
