At least three people have died and more than 1400 households have been affected after flash floods swept through parts of Adamawa State on Tuesday, leaving widespread devastation in Yola North and Yola South local government areas.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, saying a joint rapid assessment by its Yola operations office, the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), and other stakeholders revealed that no fewer than 13 communities were ravaged by the disaster.
Over 40 people were reported injured, while farmlands, homes, and critical infrastructure were submerged, displacing families and disrupting livelihoods across the affected areas.
“Displaced families are currently being sheltered within host communities, while some have been relocated to the flood resettlement camp in Girei,” the agency said.
NEMA also identified urgent humanitarian needs including food, shelter, medical support, and clean water for survivors.
The flooding has further heightened fears of food insecurity in the state, with residents warning that the destruction of farmlands will cripple harvests this year.
“Our crops are gone, everything washed away. We don’t know how we will survive without assistance,” a resident in Yola South told SaharaReporters.
The agency warned residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to early warning advisories as the rainy season peaks, stressing that more disasters could occur if precautions are ignored.
NEMA assured that it would continue working with ADSEMA, local emergency committees, and humanitarian partners to provide urgent relief and cushion the impact of the disaster.
