Residents of Lekki, one of Lagos State’s highbrow areas, were thrown into distress on Tuesday as heavy rainfall led to massive flooding across several parts of the community. The deluge left homes submerged, roads impassable, and motorists stranded for hours.
Despite repeated government assurances and interventions over the years, the Lekki axis has continued to suffer devastating floods whenever heavy rains occur. Some residents expressed deep frustration, accusing the government of not tackling the root causes of the flooding.
According to them, rather than implementing a holistic drainage master plan, authorities have focused on sand-filling parts of the sea across the corridor — a move they say worsens the situation. Others pointed out that many unapproved structures built along waterways have remained untouched, further obstructing natural channels for water to flow.
“Lekki will continue to suffer this kind of flooding until the government stops blocking the natural flow of water with needless reclamation projects,” one resident lamented. “They also need to demolish houses built on drainage paths and enforce proper urban planning if they are serious about ending this crisis.”
A video obtained by Lagos Reporters shows residents wading through knee-deep floodwaters, with cars partially submerged and businesses forced to shut down due to the devastation.
The recurring flooding has sparked renewed calls for urgent action, as residents fear worsening conditions in the months ahead.
