Former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has laid out strict conditions for any possible return to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at his Kano residence on Saturday, Kwankwaso stressed that any political alliance must safeguard the interests of his party, NNPP, and his political movement, the Kwankwasiyya group.
“Those calling on us to join APC, we have agreed to join the APC but on clear agreement that protects and respects the interest of my party, NNPP, and my political movement, Kwankwasiyya,” Kwankwaso said. “No state where you go that you don’t have NNPP and Kwankwasiyya. We have gubernatorial candidates, senatorial candidates and others. We will not allow anyone to use us and later dump us.”
The former senator recalled the sacrifices he and his associates made in the early days of the APC, noting that they endured persecution from security agencies while opposing the previous administration. Despite their contributions, Kwankwaso lamented that they received no recognition once the party took power, simply because they were not part of the original faction.
He made it clear that he is not in a hurry to abandon the NNPP, which he described as giving him “peace of mind.” However, he said he was open to alliances—not only with the APC but also with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—if genuine agreements are made and publicly honored.
“Even if it is the PDP that realised their mistakes, let’s enter an agreement that will be made public,” he added.
Kwankwaso’s remarks come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with both APC and PDP courting influential figures to consolidate their bases.
