Shamellon
A top member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos, Shamson Adio, popularly called Shamellon, appeared in court on Tuesday over a murder case, drawing heavy security presence and tense scenes within the courtroom.
Adio, who walked in surrounded by armed operatives, was ordered by the presiding judge to remove his face mask before the proceedings began. The matter was later adjourned to October 28, 2025.
The transport union boss is standing trial over his alleged role in a violent clash that claimed the life of a rival union member. His supporters, who flooded the court premises, were forcefully held back by police to prevent chaos.
This development comes weeks after SaharaReporters exposed how Adio was caught on camera viciously assaulting a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.
The incident, which occurred on Tapa Street on September 17, 2025, went viral after journalist Chris Nwandu shared the video online.
In the footage, Adio and his accomplices were seen repeatedly punching the helpless rider, dragging him to the ground, stripping him of his belongings, and attempting to undress him, while bystanders looked on without intervention.
The Lagos State Police Command later confirmed his arrest.
Eyewitnesses and rights activists say Adio has a notorious history of violence. Reports indicate that just days before the viral beating, he allegedly punched another commercial tricycle (Keke Marwa) operator, leaving him hospitalised.
Nwandu, who raised an alarm over the latest incident, called for urgent government action.
“We are reliably informed that he’s notorious for beating Marwa operators to a pulp whenever they offend him. This is a cry for justice! As we don’t know who his next victim will be, the state authorities should immediately look into this case,” he said.
