Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described Nigerian politics as a space dominated by betrayers and liars.
Jonathan, who spoke at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, in Benin City, Edo State, yesterday, said it was difficult to find politicians who remained consistent in their words and actions.
“It’s difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening,” Jonathan stated.
The former President praised Ogiadomhe who once served as Edo State deputy governor as a rare example of loyalty and trustworthiness.
“I’ve witnessed a lot of betrayers, especially during my 2015 elections. Mike is somebody who would take a bullet on my behalf. He is somebody that you can take his word to the bank. Most other politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank.
“They will tell you something, the next one hour they are saying another,” Jonathan said.
Jonathan’s comments come amid growing calls by some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains urging him to run for president in 2027.
Among those calling on him are former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido; former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana; and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.
While his cousin, Robert Azibaola, has insisted Jonathan is constitutionally qualified and will contest, others close to him say he prefers to maintain his global statesman status.
According to Nation, one ally explained that “He enjoys being a statesman since 2015 after he lost the election. He would not like to tarnish his global image. At the same time, he does not want to be the one that would allow himself to be used to destroy Southern solidarity.”
Jonathan himself has not declared interest, and his wife, Dr. Patience Jonathan, earlier in May said her husband would support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, recalling Tinubu’s role in helping Jonathan win the 2011 election.
She pledged to campaign alongside First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The 70th birthday celebration of Ogiadomhe drew dignitaries including Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo (represented by Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa), former Governors Lucky Igbinedion and Osarhiemen Osunbor, deputy governors Rev. Peter Obadan, Pius Odubu, and Marvelous Omobayo, as well as former Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo.
